Requirements
Before you install WC Currency Switch, check that your site meets the requirements below. They are the minimum versions the plugin is built for, and older versions are not supported. For example, a store on WooCommerce 6.x needs to update WooCommerce first.
Minimum versions#
| Item | Minimum |
|---|---|
| WordPress | 7.1 |
| PHP | 8.3 |
| WooCommerce | 7.0, tested up to 11.2 |
PHP is the programming language WordPress runs on. Your host sets the PHP version, and most hosts let you change it in their control panel.
How to check your versions#
- In WordPress, go to Tools > Site Health and open the Info tab.
- The WordPress section shows your WordPress version.
- The Server section shows your PHP version.
- Go to Plugins to see your WooCommerce version.
WooCommerce features that are supported#
- High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS). HPOS is WooCommerce’s newer way of storing orders in their own database tables. The plugin declares itself compatible, so you can keep HPOS on.
- Block cart and checkout. The plugin is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks as well as the classic shortcode cart and checkout.
A few checkout options only apply to one kind of checkout. For example, Change currency follow (switch the currency when the shopper changes their billing or shipping country) works on the classic checkout only.
WooCommerce must be active#
WC Currency Switch is an add-on for WooCommerce. If WooCommerce is not active, the plugin shows an admin notice saying it requires WooCommerce, and none of its store features run. The WooCommerce > Currency Switch settings page appears once WooCommerce is active.
Other things you need#
- The right user role. The settings page needs the WooCommerce “manage WooCommerce” permission. In a standard WooCommerce setup, Administrators and Shop Managers have it.
- Outgoing connections from your server. Your server fetches exchange rates from the rate provider you choose. The default provider, Frankfurter, is free and needs no key. ExchangeRate-API, Open Exchange Rates and currencyapi.com need an API key (a password-like code you get from the provider), and the Custom JSON URL option needs the address of your own rates file. License activation and updates connect to SureCart, the service that sells and licenses the plugin.
- A way to find the visitor’s country, if you want geo detection. The default reads a country header from your CDN (a content delivery network, which serves your pages from servers near your visitors): Bunny, Cloudflare, CloudFront, Vercel or Fastly. Without a CDN you can use WooCommerce Geolocation, which needs a MaxMind license key in WooCommerce settings, or IP2Location.io or freeipapi.com.
- Browser cookies. The shopper’s currency is saved in a cookie. If you use a cookie consent banner, mark the cookie as functional or necessary so it is not blocked.
- A license for automatic updates. See Activating your license.
Good to know#
- On first activation the plugin uses your WooCommerce store currency as its default currency. It does not change your store currency.
- Geo detection is optional. If it cannot find a visitor’s country, the visitor simply sees your default currency and can pick another from the switcher.
