What is WC Currency Switch?
WC Currency Switch is a WooCommerce plugin that lets your store show and sell in many currencies. You enter your prices once, in your own store currency, and the plugin shows each shopper the right price in their currency. For example, if your store sells in USD and you turn on KWD (Kuwaiti dinar) and EUR, a shopper from Kuwait sees prices in KWD from their very first page, and a shopper from Germany sees EUR. Each shopper can still pick another currency at any time from a currency switcher.
This page explains what the plugin does and how it fits together, so you know what to expect before you set it up.
What your shoppers see#
- Their own currency on the first visit. The plugin works out the visitor’s country and picks the matching currency, for example Kuwait to KWD. This is called geo detection.
- A currency switcher. A small button shows the current currency. Clicking it opens a popup where the shopper picks another one. On phones the popup opens as a full-width panel from the bottom of the screen.
- A choice that sticks. The chosen currency is saved in a small browser cookie (named
wccs_currencyby default, kept for 30 days), so every page shows the same currency. - Prices in that currency everywhere, from the shop and product pages to the cart and checkout.
What you control#
- Which currencies you offer. The plugin knows 154 currencies. You choose which ones to turn on and in what order they appear.
- Exchange rates. Live rates from five providers (Frankfurter, which is free and needs no key, plus ExchangeRate-API, Open Exchange Rates, currencyapi.com or your own JSON URL), or a fixed rate that you set for a currency.
- Pricing rules per currency. A conversion fee (a percentage added on top), rounding to a nice ending such as .99, and the number format: decimals, separators, symbol position and a custom symbol.
- Fixed prices. Set an exact price per product and per variation for any currency, instead of a converted one.
- Location rules. Choose which currency shows for which country. With Polylang or TranslatePress you can also choose a currency per language.
- Checkout. Pick which payment methods show for each currency, lock the switcher on the cart and checkout pages, or take every payment in your store currency.
- Order records. Each order saves the currency and the exchange rate it was placed at, and WooCommerce Analytics is kept in your store currency.
There are also extras: a currency converter ([wccs_converter]), an exchange rate line of text ([wccs_rate]), a switcher for your site menus, a rate history with CSV export, and an email when rates are refreshed by hand.
How it works#
Your store currency is the currency you enter product prices in. Some settings call it the base currency, for example Settle orders in base currency. The plugin never converts it; it converts from it.
For every other currency, a price is worked out in three steps: the store price times the exchange rate (or your fixed rate), then the conversion fee, then rounding. A fixed product price skips all three.
The plugin also works with page caching and CDNs (a CDN, or content delivery network, serves cached copies of your pages from servers near your visitors). A cached page is one copy of HTML shown to many visitors, so the plugin puts the price for every enabled currency on the page, and a small script shows the one that matches the visitor’s cookie. One cached copy works for all currencies.
When a shopper switches currency, the page reloads by default (Reload mode). There is also an Instant mode, which is in beta, that swaps prices without a reload.
Examples#
A store sells in USD and adds EUR. A product costs $25.00. Say the exchange rate is 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, you set a 2% conversion fee for EUR, and you round up to .99:
- Rate: 25.00 x 0.92 = 23.00
- Fee: 23.00 x 1.02 = 23.46
- Rounding up to .99: 23.99
A shopper browsing in EUR sees €23.99. A shopper in the USA still sees $25.00.
Good to know#
- Installing the plugin never changes your WooCommerce store currency. It reads it and uses it as the default.
- The plugin works with WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) and with the block cart and checkout.
- It has built-in support for many other plugins, page builders and themes. The Integrations tab shows which ones are active on your site.
- Your license turns on automatic updates. See Activating your license.
